This is a success story. I've owned a UMAX PowerLook 2100 XL for years. It offers a 12 x 17' scanning area, and it works well.
I was having some troubles with my SCSI chain recently. It would time out during preview or during the scan intermittently. I removed other devices from the SCSI chain, and it worked fine. I decided to try to bypass my internal SCSI card and use a firewire solution, and the following solution worked well.
I bought: 1 Ratoc Systems' FR1SX Firewire to Ultra SCSI Converter ($86.00) Contains: -2 firewire ports -HD50 Male port (which requires the separate adapter.) -CD-ROM containing a driver which wasn't necessary.1 HD50F to Cent50M SCSI adapter. (Cost: $8.00) -can plug directly into the UMAX Powerlook 2100XL Optionally, if you have a Centronics 50M-50M SCSI cable available: -plug the above adapter into a Centronics F/F gender-changer -the gender-changer plugs into a Centronics 50M to Centronics 50M cable, which can plug into the UMAX. I was very impressed that running 10.4.6 on my G4 from 2002, it worked immediately without installing the Ratoc driver from the CD-ROM.
Even if I connect my UMAX Powerlook 2100XL after the G4 is powered up, it is recognized immediately, without hesitation, by Vuescan or by Silverfast 6.4.3. I have asked around for years about how to leave SCSI behind without abandoning my Powerlook 2100XL, and finally I have a solution. I am very impressed that it works so well, even when attached through a pretty complex firewire chain.

It took more time to research this project - to read all of the text on the UMAX site, the Ratoc site, and in the Ratoc manual - than it did to plug it in and set it up. Total setup time: 2 minutes, including unwrapping the products and booting the Mac.
