Original title: having extreme difficulty acclimitizing to 7 from XP. None of the instructions online seem to resemble what I am experiencing either.

I don't know why this is but none of the instructions related to windows 7 seem to resemble what I am seeing on screen. My biggest hangup at the moment is with the 'theme' of windows 7 which in theory one can change to the classic windows version - only the 'personalization' routines outlined on several websites, inlcuding microsoft's seem to apply. So how does one get the classic them anyways? And how do I retrieve the function of the taskbar where rolling over any open programs gets you a preview of the window? It has disappeared and i can't see the option to bring it back. And, say i wanted to see control panel in 'classic' view, how would I do this? Yes, i know where the persolization window is but clicking on a classic windows theme gives me different colours but the exact same confusing functionality.

I don't really see a huge difference. What I'm looking for is the neutral grey menus without the many outlines, strokes, shadows and transparencies I see when I click on a 'classic' theme. I essentially want it to look like XP - which it does not. Even when I am using an 'aero' theme I still get only text when i rollover an item in the taskbar. This really shouldn't be so difficult and I'm beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with my computer itself. Windows 7 came preloaded with my new HP laptop Hi If you have an Aero Theme enabled, you should definitely be seeing a thumbnail popup for a program that has files or websites opened. You might want to ask HP Support about this.

You can also run the Aero Troubleshooter. Open the Aero troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel.

In the search box, type Troubleshooter, click Troubleshooting, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, click Display Aero desktop effects. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In the resulting window, select the Advanced link at the bottom of the window and place a check mark in the Apply repairs automatically option. Click the Next Button.

If the troubleshooter does not find any problems, select the Explore additional options button. As for making Windows 7 look exactly like XP, this will be difficult to do because so many components have been changed, first in Vista and then even more in Windows 7. If you are using the Classic Theme, you can go to Personalize and click the Color Button at the bottom of the window. This will show the old style display options dialog that you can use to change the colors on many of the components, such as Menus, message boxes, etc. Hope this helps. Thank You for using Windows 7.
